Te Ara Whetū is an important cultural and community project for the Waikanae community. With the concept design complete, we are moving into the preliminary design phase, continuing to refine ideas that honour the area's heritage and future aspirations.
It has been a privilege to work for the Kāpiti Coast District Council and alongside Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, whose involvement has been central to shaping this project. Their cultural narrative is deeply embedded in the design, creating a space that reflects identity, belonging, and connection to the community. One of our project collaborators noted, "The ability to work with Te Ātiawa and incorporate the cultural narrative into Te Ara Whetū is amazing," reflecting our shared vision of creating a library that respects the past while looking to the future.
Te Ara Whetū, meaning The Path of the Stars, tells the story of movement from the Tararua Ranges to the Tasman Sea, capturing the community’s connection to both the natural environment and built spaces. Designed to be warm and inclusive, this library will encourage connection, learning, and creativity, providing a welcoming gathering place for people of all ages.
The evolving design embraces flexibility, ensuring the space can adapt to the community’s needs as it grows. It aims to foster a vibrant environment that supports a range of activities, helping Waikanae thrive socially and culturally. As one collaborator shared, "I look forward to continuing this project with Studio Pacific and am excited to see the final design."
Te Ara Whetū will be a place where stories are shared, relationships are strengthened, and wellbeing is nurtured, creating a lasting legacy for the people of Waikanae.
