Studio Pacific Announces Board Transition – Marc Woodbury Appointed as Executive Director

As Studio Pacific continues to evolve, we announce a key transition within our Board of Directors. Effective 31 March 2025, Evžen Novák will step down as Executive Director, with Marc Woodbury taking on the role to help shape the next phase of our practice.

Acknowledging Evžen Novák’s Contributions

As a Founder and Director of Studio Pacific, Evžen Novák has played a pivotal role in shaping the practice since its inception in 1992. Over three decades, he has been a guiding force behind the studio’s kaupapa, with a particular focus on sustainable architecture, mass timber construction, and the delivery of commercial, civic, and community buildings across Aotearoa.

His portfolio includes significant cultural and educational buildings such as the He Tohu Exhibition in Wellington, Aratoi Museum of Art and History in Masterton, and a series of projects at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) in Auckland. He also led the design of the Nelson Airport Terminal, widely recognised for its innovative use of engineered timber and environmental responsiveness, as well as multiple refurbishment projects for Massey University’s Palmerston North campusMore recently, he has leveraged his timber technology knowledge with the innovative 98 metre span engineered timber Hangar 4 for Air New Zealand and with a new terminal building for Palmerston North AirportThese projects reflect his commitment to creating architecture that is not only technically and environmentally-responsible but also grounded in place and community.

Beyond his design leadership, Evžen has played a central role in the strategic and operational development of the practice. He was appointed Managing Director in 2020, leading Studio Pacific through a period of growth and transition while strengthening its governance structure. His leadership has been instrumental in fostering a strong internal culture, encouraging collaboration, and embedding sustainability across all levels of the business. Prior to his tenure as Managing Director, Evžen had already been deeply involved in the firm’s leadership, guiding its direction and reinforcing its commitment to design excellence.

In December 2023, Evžen stepped down as Managing Director to focus full-time on sustainability initiatives within the practice, furthering his long-standing passion for environmentally responsible design. In 2024, his professional contributions gained recognition as he was named a Fellow of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. His decision to now step down from the Board as Executive Director marks a considered and natural progression in Studio Pacific’s governance evolution.

Reflecting on Evžen’s contributions at the board level, Board Chair Dr Helen Anderson shared:

"Evžen has been an integral member of our Board of Directors, shaping our governance approach with the same foresight and commitment that have defined his architectural and professional practice career. His ability to balance strategic vision with practical decision-making has strengthened the board and positioned the practice for long-term success. On behalf of the board, we thank him for his invaluable leadership."

While stepping away from governance, Evžen will continue his mahi within the practice, leading our sustainability kaupapa and championing environmentally-responsible design.
