Stephen McDougall is a Founding Director of Studio Pacific Architecture, having established the practice in 1992 alongside Nick Barratt-Boyes and Evžen Novák. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the studio’s design ethos and strategic direction for over three decades.
Stephen is a Registered New Zealand Architect with more than 30 years’ experience across the disciplines of architecture, interior design, urban design and strategic masterplanning. His work spans not only Aotearoa but also international contexts, with experience in Libya, Australia, Great Britain, France, The Netherlands and Uzbekistan.
He has provided design leadership on many of Studio Pacific’s award-winning projects, including Tākina – Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre and BNZ Place. Stephen brings particular expertise in new workplace theory, spatial planning and the look and feel of contemporary workspaces, and has led the design of several of the Studio’s most recognised workplace projects.
Stephen’s leadership also extends to key urban design and waterfront regeneration projects, as well as housing and accommodation developments. He is passionate about architecture and design, and brings that energy into every project he works on.
A strong advocate for local industry, Stephen is an official Ambassador for the Campaign for Wool NZ and actively promotes the use of New Zealand wool across Studio Pacific’s work. He is also a prominent voice within the profession, championing material innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful design outcomes.
